Why do we get up in the mornings, fight traffic, and spend 40-70 hours a week at the office? What’s our motive?  Stop and think, is it money?
A lot has been said about the love of money.  I’m sure you have heard the song, “For the Love of Money” by The O’Jays. This is the song that is played at the beginning of the show, The Apprentice.  Mr. Trump is very rich and successful, yet he has said, “Money was never a big motivation for me, except as a way to keep score. The real excitement is playing the game.” He finds his work exciting and challenging and he has found satisfaction in it.  His target was the challenge, not money.  What’s your target?
Maybe the goal needs to be relationships?  When we build lasting connections with our customers, they will be less likely to leave a company.  This is because they would not be leaving your company, but they would be leaving you.  I personally identify with certain companies by their employees.  When I refer to my CPA, Doctor, Chiropractor, or Dentist, I never say to my wife, “Honey, I have an appointment with Artistic Smiles,” it’s always “Dr. Kim.”
When we are shooting for money only, we tend to see our customers as objects and not people.  Here are some examples:

  1. Not knowing their names.
  2. Not knowing what they buy from you.
  3. Not keeping track or acknowledging how long they have been a customer.
  4. Not knowing if they are happy with your products or services.
  5. Being more concerned about being right than listening.

 So, who do you love?  It needs to be customers, not money.  If we see our customers with dollar signs over their heads, we are missing the point of business.  Most businesses grow by referrals, so what are they saying about your company, or even you?  Revenues over Relationships will lead to Ruin.  If Relationships come first, the Revenue will Rise.
